Skip the microwave in favor of popping your own popcorn on the stovetop—it's just as fast, way more flavorful, and (in our opinion) significantly more fun. Senior editor Karen Shimizu walks you through a foolproof method.

Enlarge What you Need

  • A heavy-bottomed pot with a snug-fitting lid
  • Neutral oil, like canola or peanut oil
  • Popcorn kernels
  • Flavorings and toppings of your choice (we like salt, pepper, and butter) and a brown paper bag for mixing

What to Do

  • Pour the oil into the pot, and add one kernel of popcorn. Cover, and wait for the single kernel to pop.
  • Add the remainder of the popcorn kernels to the pot, using just enough to form a single layer. Cover, shake the pot quickly and vigorously to coat them evenly in the oil, and wait until you hear popping begin.
  • When the popping has slowed to once every five seconds, remove the pot from the heat and take off the lid.
  • To season the popcorn, pour the popped kernels into a brown paper bag. Add salt, pepper, and butter (or whatever toppings you're using), hold the top of the bag closed in a tight grip, and shake vigorously to combine.
