Eating the Ultimate Apple

This week, a cardboard box arrived at our offices from Minneapolis, Minnesota. The return address indicated that it was from one of SAVEUR's contributing photographers, Ariana Lindquist, and inside we found a dozen red-and-yellow apples, each just small enough to fit in your palm. They were intensely aromatic, with a honeyed, cinnamon-laced scent, and the flesh was sweet, crisp, and juicy—they were, pretty much, the ultimate snacking apple. I'd never had anything quite like them, and couldn't figure out what they were.

The apples, it turned out, were a new variety called KinderKrisp developed by David MacGregor, an independent fruit breeder based in South Haven, Minnesota. The variety was just released a few years ago, and this fall sees the very first fruits appearing on the market. If you want to try them, Plum Crazy Orchard (Ariana's supplier) will be selling them at the Minneapolis Farmer's Market this Saturday and Sunday. Or, if you want a private supply, you can buy a tree from Stark Brothers and wait a few years.
